NVTV – Valentin Lopez, Tribal Chairperson of Amah Mutsun Tribal Band

Cihuapilli Rose Amador and Sundust Martinez interviews Valentin Lopez, Tribal Chairperson of Amah Mutsun Tribal Band on Native Voice TV.

Amador asks Lopez what he would like the audience to know about Californian Native Americans. Lopez speaks specifically about the early Californian history. First, about the 1852 treaty and secondly, the executive order by the first Californian governor.

Lopez wants to make sure that the audience understands the 1852 Treaty with the Federal government. The treaty was for 8.5 million acres, spread out over 14 Californian reservations; Lopez added, ‘Representing about 7.5 percent of the state of California’. Although Amah Mutsun was not a signature to that treaty but mentions Mutsun tribal members were taken to one or more of these 14 reservations.

Lopez just mentions Californian Governor, Perter Harteman Burnett, signed an Executive Order to ‘Exterminate’ all Indians and that he paid 1.2 million dollars in that effort.
(Table 3 sets forth the twenty-seven California laws that the State Comptroller relied upon
in determining the total expenditures recapitulated in the official report. The total amount
of claims submitted to State of California Comptroller for Expeditions against the Indians
was $1,293,179.20.)

and executive order.
